Legislation punishing computer-related crimes makes unauthorized access to a user’s PC illegal. Yet, there are very rare prosecutions of manufacturers and purveyors of spyware, software slyly installed on computers to secretly gather information on the user. A computer owner whose PC have been infected can always install a spyware remover program, but the damage may have already been done: bits of information about the user has already caused a bombardment of pop-up ads, unsolicited e-mail from marketers, the computer operations and internet browsing have slowed to a crawl.
